day 6 – Turnour Island to Cormorant Channel Marine Park (Lo50°30.0’L126°51.3’)

We all needed a bit of a sleep-in this morning. After a few pots of coffee and a big old breakfast, we ventured onshore to explore the abandoned buildings and remnants of a by-gone lifestyle. Once we had combed the beach and briefly investigated the spooky skeleton of a house, we loaded back into the Carefree Isle and started on our brief voyage into the Broughton Archipelago. Just south of Dead Point on Harbledown Island, we dinghy’ed ashore and found the Monk’s Wall, an abandoned but massive rock wall and archway built in the 1800’s. Another beach combing session, then back in the boat to travel through Indian Channel, to the Carey Group of Islands and between Leone & Madrona Islands. Then through Village Channel between Swanson & Crease Islands. Around Swanson Island, south through Blackfish Sound (where we saw our first whale of the journey, from too far away to decipher what kind of whale it was), through Weynton Passage to the Marine Park of Cormorant Channel on Pearce Island. The 3 crabs caught this afternoon while at Monk’s Wall will be a major part of tonight’s dinner, together with the mussels and clams collected from the beach combing. Tomorrow we are headed into Port McNeill, a fairly major port this far north, where we will be having a change of crew for the next leg of this journey. It is also time to stock up on provisions; we are starting to catch our own protein but need fresh veggies, dairy and bread products. And beer. Always wise to get more beer, eh?

(the first pic is for you, gaelan. wish you were here!)
