day 19 – Maquinna Provincial Park (Hot Springs Cove)

Hot Springs Cove used to be one of those really great, secret spots that was only accessible by boat, kayak, or float plane. Now it is serviced daily by at least 3 tourism companies who bring in folks for day trips by plane, water taxis, and a huge 2 masted sleep-aboard sailboat. There is also a campground nearby for overnighters, and a floating B&B yacht anchored in the cove. After a hearty breakfast we donned our bathing suits and headed for the hot springs. A picturesque 2 km walk on a boardwalk up and down and through the forest finally brought us to the hot spring, and the 3 perfect hot tubs nestled in the rocks beneath it. The sweet sulphurously fragranced mist arising from the small brook and the moss surrounding it, and the way it trickled into a waterfall which functioned both as the perfect shower and perfect back massager seemed somehow magical. Even though it was positively crawling with other humans during the day. We all found our own way to enjoy it during the day amongst the masses. But we returned later that night, after all of the day tourists had gone back to wherever it was that they came from. We arrived just as a couple who was camping was leaving, then we had the whole place to ourselves for about half an hour. As we were leaving some other boaters arrived to take our spot. It was a great day in a great setting, a perfect follow-up day for an intense day on the sea, and the hot springs experienced the way it used to be – with a crew who got there the hard way.
